Patience is a must! Whether you are going cross-country on a bike or starting a training program, or starting a new job too much, too soon, can be devastating. It's very easy to add that extra mile on to the tempo run, or extra miles on the ride but these small additions could have negative results. Why are the small additions such a big detail? Because these small things begin to add up to exahaustion, burnout, or injury.
In training you MUST build a good foundation before you can start going fast. You can try and do speedwork the first day back but have fun sitting on the couch the next few days as your body tries to recover. We all go into a new workout plan, job, or pursuit of a goal with good intentions but within a week or so we are wondering how we are going to accomplish anything because we are already exhausted. You must build a good foundation BEFORE you start hitting it hard. You build a good foundation by putting in the miles and slowly building the distance. Instead of asking yourself where you want to be next week ask yourself this...
Where do I want to be next year?
It's great to have goals between here and there to help achieve the bigger goal but having next year's goal will allow you to push through those discouraging times, or the slow buildup, knowing you are pushing to the bigger and higher goal.
Going faster early may get you there sooner, but building a good foundation and going slower allows you to stay there longer.
